Visitors to Oaxaca love to hike in the mountains that surround this lovely colonial city, and one of the obvious attractions is Cerro San Felipe, which looms over the Valles Centrales on the north side of town. Our Hoofing It In Oaxaca excursion to Cerro San Felip goes by way of the trail network at La Cumbre. Our vans will shuttle hikers to La Cumbre, a ride that will take 1.5 hours each way. There is an admission fee of 40 pesos per person at La Cumbre. From the entrance station it is a drive of 14 kilometers (8.73 miles) on unpaved roads to the trailhead. The hike itself covers a distance of just 5.6 kms (3.5 miles), but is rated difficult because of the steepness of the terrain and the fact hikers will climb and descend a total of 868 meters (2250 feet) on the trail. Note that the use of hiking poles is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for this outing. Participants should pack sack lunches to be enjoyed along with the panoramic views from the top of the mirador. The ride to and from La Cumbre may induce motion sickness. Those who are affected by this condition should claim seats at the front of the vans.
