On today’s trek we will first climb the mountain ridge on the west side of the Elta Valley in Sprinter vans, then descend back into the valley on foot. The arduous climb along a steep and twisty country road affords spectacular views of the Oaxaca Valley, but may induce motion sickness among some — those so afflicted are encourage to sit in the front seats of the vans! The hike back down into the valley on an isolated dirt road offers many vistas, but hike participants are cautioned to watch their footing on the steep descent. Hiking poles are recommended. As we will be without shade most of the way, hats and sunscreen are also suggested. Hike participants will need to cross the stream meandering through the valley a total of seven times along our route, either by hopping from rock to rock or merrily splashing through the water.
